New Hunter S. Thompson book takes publishing world by surprise

- Late author’s final work profiles singer Dusty Carr -

Aspen, Colorado, March 15, 2007 ( API) - Unbeknownst to friends and family, at the time of his death author Hunter S. Thompson was completing the final chapter of a biography of singer Dusty Carr, titled It’s Not Groovy At All: The Depraved, Atavistic Life of Dusty Carr.

Thompson died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound on February 21, 2005.

“This book is completely out of left field,” said Frank Siedelman, a representative of Dell-Harcourt Publishing. “Hunter never mentioned it to anyone in this business. We’re all very pleasantly shocked.”

In January 2006, the Thompson family delivered the book to Dell-Harcourt, questioning the viability of publishing. They were initially concerned that Thompson was driven to suicide by having to think of Dusty Carr everyday—and as a result the book might be deeply flawed. Editors responded with the overall opinion that it could be Thompson’s best work since Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. “I think that Hunter and Dusty are very similar in some way,” said Siedelman, “and this stimulated Hunter’s creativity and dread.

When reached at the Blue Martini Lounge & Grill, Atlantic City, where he just completed a two-month residency, Dusty Carr said he and Thompson spent five weeks together during the summer of 2003. “I knew him long before he was a big shot,” said Carr. “We met around 1960 in Puerto Rico. We hated and loved each other—which is how friendships survive.” Carr said that Thompson was interested in “people with white souls but black hearts.”

In response to his friend’s death, Carr wrote a song entitled Time Travel that he says sums it all up. “I’m older now,” said Carr, “and I have reached a state of tranquility, making peace with time and death. I mean, people die, lovers grow ugly and you got to dump them, and you have to spend longer in the washroom. It’s freakin’ terrible. But when the Grim Reaper comes for me, I’m going to rip his balls out by the roots. I ain’t going quietly.”

Advanced excerpts from of It’s Not Groovy At All: The Depraved, Atavistic Life of Dusty Carr, will appear on www.dustycarr.com. Time Travel will appear on Carr’s upcoming CD, Sick Whimpering from the Bedroom—and other Love Songs.
