Excerpt from 'The Face of Excess', January 22, 1972, Inner Peace and Personal Growth Magazine, with Dean Garbitt.
D.G.: Dusty, if we can just talk about your reputation for a moment. I think everyone is well aware of your drug and alcohol abuse…
D.C.: Wait a second sweet pea. I resent the word 'abuse'. I don't abuse anything. I respect booze.
D.G.: Let me rephrase it. What role has drugs played in your life?
D.C.: Before this tape started rolling, you were talking to me about inner peace. Listen, all that means is happiness, right? So, the question is, how do you become happy, right?
D.G.: There's more to it than that.
D.C.: Bullshit. It's all about happiness. And people get happy in different ways. Some go to church, others have a lot of sex, others like to spend money. Who cares. And some people drink and take drugs. It's all the same thing. The only difference is a question of legality. And it isn't men who are afraid of drugs, it's women. Since women got the vote, every politician has been forced to come out and speak badly about drugs and booze, and make up these jackass laws. And our prisons are full of men, not women, who have just puffed a few joints. But the fact is that most politicians are men and they have used a lot of drugs and a lot of them are alcoholics. And what about feminine guys like you, skinny guys with goatees who nibble on nut mixtures, who don't have the balls to stand up against these harping women, and actually buy-in to this crap. What are you so scared of?
D.G.: Where does this anger come from? Why are you so tense?
D.C.: The anger comes from seeing my potential for fun rapidly diminishing. Las Vegas is the only place in the world where true men feel truly comfortable. Everyone is so sensitive now, and a lot of that is due to all of these faggy little hippies and their crystal healing and their stinking incense who try to make out that they're poetic guys who aren't afraid to cry. And the only reason they're doing it is to impress broads and get laid.
D.G.: Are you saying that happiness and sensitivity are mutually exclusive?
D.C.: Yes, because if you start feeling sorry for someone then you have to take on their problems - and having problems is no fun, right? Plus, if you fall in love with a broad, that means that you can't have sex with other women - so where's the fun in that? Hey Davy Crockett, please stop me when I say something original.
